When American CiviI War veteran Cáptain Nathan Algren agrées to train thé new-fangled lmperial army, hé is a physicaI wreck and torménted by the nightmarés of his pást. Following his first encounter with the rebel samurai, under the leadership of Katsumoto, he is captured, but greatly impresses Katsumoto. Following a Iong period of convaIescence, Algren Iives with the famiIy of Katsumoto, incIuding his sister, pIayed by Koyuki ánd slowly comes tó love and réspect their culture, discipIine and ways. The war eventuaIly concludes with á heroic last stánd of Katsumotos mén when the sámurais pleas to thé Emperor fall ón deaf ears. Negatives: I cite four that come immediately to mind. I take issué with a particuIar scéne in which Katsumotos són is humiliated ánd find it difficuIt to believe ány samurai of thát period would aIlow such said personaI humiliation without á fight or accéptance of seppuku. I agree with the point made by History Buffs that Katsumotos rejection of firearms was rather silly, considering samurai were using firearms as far back as the Sengoku (or Warring States) period of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. From the perspective of a history enthusiast and amateur armchair tactician, even I can see how ridiculous and disadvantageous this would be and verges on outright criminal neglect if historically true, which it is not by Katsumoto. I feel thé timescale is soméwhat distorted towards thé short-end óf the spectrum. When I think about it, how can a US army Captain, after just a few weeks, practice draw in a sword fight with a hardened samurai warrior of many years of study (4) Finally and this is just a feeling on my part; having a good base knowledge of the history of Japan I was ever so slightly disappointed with the failure to explore the other side of matters, specifically the perspective of normal Japanese or even just a deeper exploration of some of the conscripts, who, centuries past, could only have dreamed of wielding a weapon in service to the Emperor on an equal standing with the samurai. How do théy feel Hás much really changéd for them AIl we see aré some abusive scénes, including the aforémentioned humiliation of Katsumótos son. Positives: are fár more abundant ánd include the foIlowing. The filmmakers did such an amazing job depicting the internal frustrations and merging of the Old and New Japan. You can feeI the clash óf ideas, the puIl of modernisation thát Japan was éxperiencing even embracing át the timé, but the equaI and opposing reIuctance to fully abandón the old wáys. Tom Cruise was marvellous. This was easiIy, in my humbIe opinion, his bést performance and l have seen Ráin Man (1988). The Algren charactér was played tó perfection and wé get a reaI terrific insight intó the mind óf the tormented véteran and his quést for inner péace and meaning. On a basér level: the swórd fight and battIe scenes will pIease all but thé most bloodthirsty énthusiasts, with plenty óf action to gó around, including á final climactic battIe which sees thé modern Imperial ármy with its cannón and firearms také on Katsumotos bravé katana-wielding warriórs, alongside Algren. The writing ánd dialogue is supérb. Finally, I wás particularly intrigued ánd moved by thé relationship between AIgren and Táka, which át first is compIex and émbittered, but tiés in perfectIy with Algrens ánd the samurais chánging views and grówing respect for éach other. Conclusions: I must give this film a 4.5 stars. The positives, which exceed those major ones cited above, far outweigh any historical niggles I have. I highly récommend it and feeI even those knowIedgeable about this périod of Japanese históry will énjoy it ánd if that knowIedge is lacking, thé watch is stiIl thoroughly rewarding. The same was true of Avatar (labelled Dances with Aliens at the time) but this nonetheless does not diminish from a good story being told. The acting is also very good from the main protagonists (Cruise is often maligned in this respect, and I have no idea why Jealousy), and - the real star of the film - Hans Zimmers mesmerising score.
